چکیده

On the basis of recently estimated emission inventory for East Asia with a resolution of 1x1, the transport and chemical transformation of sulfur compounds over East Asia during the period of February 22 through May 4, 2001, was investigated by using the Models-3 Community Multi-scale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system with meteorological fields calculated by the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS). For evaluating the model performance simulated concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and aerosol sulfate (SO4 ) were compared with the observations on the ground level at four remote sites in Japan and on board of aircraft and vessel during TRACE-P (the Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific) and ACE-Asia (Asian Pacific Regional Aerosol Characterization Experiment) field campaigns, and it was found that the model reproduces many of the important features in the observations, including horizontal and vertical gradients. The SO2 and SO4 2concentrations show pronounced variations in time and space, with SO2 and SO4 2behaving differently due to the interplay of chemical conversion, removal and transport processes. Analysis of model results shows that emission was the dominant term in regulating the SO2 spatial distribution, while conversion of SO2 to SO4 2in the gas phase and the aqueous phase and wet removal were the primary factors that control SO4 2amounts. The gas phase and the aqueous phase have the same importance in oxidizing SO2, and about 42%

The impact of transpacific transport of mineral dust in the United States

We use a global chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) to estimate the impact of transpacific transport of mineral dust on aerosol concentrations in North America during 2001. We have implemented two dust mobilization schemes in the model (GOCART and DEAD) and find that the best simulation of North American surface observations with GEOSChem is achieved by combining the topographic source used in...

Airborne measurement of inorganic ionic components of fine aerosol particles using the particle-into-liquid sampler coupled to ion chromatography technique during ACE-Asia and TRACE-P

[1] Eight inorganic ions in fine aerosol particles (Dp < 1.3 mm) were measured on board the NCAR C130 and NASA P-3B aircraft during the 2001 Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE)-Asia and the Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific (TRACE-P) experiments, respectively. Concentrations of NH4 , SO4 2 , NO3 , Ca, K, Mg, Na, and Cl were determined using a particle-into-liquid sampler c...

Long-range transport of sulfur dioxide in the central Pacific

[1] Long-range transport of sulfur dioxide (SO2) from east Asia to the central North Pacific troposphere was observed on transit flights during the NASA Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific mission. A series of SO2-enhanced layers above the boundary layer was observed during these flights. The significant features included enhanced SO2 layers associated with low water vapor and low...

Long-range transport of acidifying substances in East Asia—Part II Source– receptor relationships

Region-to-grid source–receptor (S/R) relationships are established for sulfur and reactive nitrogen deposition in East Asia, using the Eulerian-type Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model with emission and meteorology data for 2001. We proposed a source region attribution methodology by analyzing the non-linear responses of the CMAQ model to emission changes. Sensitivity simulations were...

Sources, distribution, and acidity of sulfateeammonium aerosol in the Arctic in winterespring

We use GEOS-Chem chemical transport model simulations of sulfateeammonium aerosol data from the NASA ARCTAS and NOAA ARCPAC aircraft campaigns in the North American Arctic in April 2008, together with longer-term data from surface sites, to better understand aerosol sources in the Arctic in winterespring and the implications for aerosol acidity. Arctic pollution is dominated by transport from m...
